What makes Portugal so famous is not that it is a culmination of tasty ingredients, but, it is about traditions and memories. I remember, as we navigated through the narrow streets of the old town, our guide told us that behind every Portuguese dish there is the recipe of a grandmother which has been passed down to a mother or an aunt.
Due to the fact that Portugal has a long coastline, it is only natural that fish is the staple of Portuguese cuisine. A lot of local favourite dishes are fish based. It would be no exaggeration to say that the Portuguese could cook cod a different way on each day of the year.
Although Portuguese food is famous for seafood, there are a dew other culinary delights which I need to mention. The Patel de Nata or the custard tart, the Caldo Verde soup - a potato based soup seasoned with garlic and greens and bacalhau - salted cod.
Olive oil is the base of all Portuguese cuisine. The most common spices are paprika, piri piri, garlic, bay leaf and to my surprise cilantro!
To finish off the meals, Port is serve with desserts.
Given the fact that Spain and Portugal are neighbours, Do you know the different between Spanish and Portuguese cuisines ?
